I've always loved the Lotus 7 type cars. Many years ago I started a DIY locost build. Got in over my head a bit, life progresses and passions drift. She was never finished, and long gone...
I saw a review of the MK RX5-140 on youtube and was sold. Worked with the crew at MK to spec out what I wanted, waited forever for the kit to ship, and then paid a pile of money to have her crated up for ocean shipping, and shipped over. Which of course takes another 6 weeks with customs paperwork / tariffs / final delivery / etc. Order entry to delivery to my house was over 9 months.
Absolutely enjoyed the build process. I was very impressed with the quality of the parts sent, the ease of fitment, and the comprehensiveness of the kit.
About half way through my build, I had youtube on in the background listening to the weekly video MK uploads, and heard them mention they were looking for a US distributor.
I run another small business that has quite a few similarities to this MK relationship, a hobby & passion that I have managed to find a niche that I can fulfil. I love working with customers, and creating the dream car for someone seems like it should be a blast.
I put my hat in the ring for the US distributorship, and the rest is history.
We can import these kits in bulk, for a fraction of the cost per car. We handle all of the paperwork and process, and will try to keep a few kits in stock down the road. This solves all of the difficulties I had to wade through and makes the purchase painless and delivery quick.
Now I just need to sell some cars!
I opted for the RX5-VTEC Kit.
I already own a 2000 NB Miata,, with a K24 Honda engine swap.
I planned to make some spares between the cars, and slap a K24 in the RX5 kit as well.
The K20 kit is a bolt in engine in the RX5-VTEC kit.
The K24 is not, and required extensive fabrication - but it's doable, and very snug in there...
And, since I'm a glutton for punishment, I also added ABS to the car.
Like I said before, the parts MK sent were so very easy to assemble and went very smoothly, I was very impressed. The extras I added on probably tripled the build time, but that's what I wanted.
She is a beast, maybe a little too spicy honestly. A heavy passenger tames her down a bit though, to an almost reasonable level.
Drives great, very drivable and stable for such a light car.
I'm currently waiting for street legal process to be completed.
I'm hoping to update with some drive videos and some final pics shortly - but a mess of build photos are below.
Please keep in mind, these pictures were only taken to share with family and friends - as the build was done in my garage, without anticipating the need to share in public. I had no idea I was building a demo car at the time and the photos are a bit random. But if you want some build details, poke around. I have a new shop being built that will provide a clean and organized build location for customer builds, but this is where it started.
